Trophy Scars. I'm serious. I'm not being one of those kids that just says a band is their absolute favoite ever just because they've liked them a lot lately. I've thought long and hard about this. Trophy Scars are my absolute favorite band ever.

kinda meant GREATEST band ever (as if one band could possibly acheive that status over all others) as i was interested to see whom everyone thought was worthy of that title.
i make that point just because, some of my favorite bands may not be considered that great.
i do feel, however, that my 3 favorite bands are great in their own right. it's possible that most of the board might agree.
incubus, glassJAw, and trophy scars are those three if anyone was wondering. barry white was a close fourth, but in the end, "baby eskimo kisses" edged out "it's ecstasy when you lay down next to me"
It's true... why would we waste so much time if we didn't think TS was the greastest. Broken Social Scene is close second for many of the same reasons why I like Trophy Scars. Lol @ hipster Tanya and BSS.

Well, a band's longevity is what I really consider to be the determining factor of a good band, and a great band. If a band can keep making brilliant music for more than a decade and continue to apply to a wide amount of people over the course of years and years, regardless of whether they've broken up or not. Ever redefining their sound but maintaining their original one, I'd definitly place you as one of the greats for all time. Metallica,Van Halen,Led Zep, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Glassjaw, and I have a high degree of faith in Trophy Scars over time. They've been hitting the mark without fail time and time since they've started. I can only vaguely imagine what they'll sound like five or six years down the road.
My opinion on the greatest band of all time is probably Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden was at the forefront of the new wave of Brittish metal (right next to Def Leppard, but i just like Maiden more) and was instrumental (no pun intended) in bringing metal into mainstream america. For that reason I believe they are one of, if not, the greatest band of all time.

i feel the same. i cant imagine finding a band that could be even as close to trophy scars in my heart i like the beatles a whole lot but trophy scars and the beatles arent on the same page of liking

Good one, I forgot to put them in there as well. The fact that they've been around forever and STILL have just a big a following as they did when they first formed is freaking amazing. Kids younger than me today still hold them heavy regard also. And in terms of vocals I've heard few that compare. Def Leppard is a good one too. Although I didnt get into them until way later.
longevity is an interesting factor to mention... but more likely it would be part of some list of primary factors in a band's career... like:
longevity originalty (in genre, as interpreted by the times) ideology/lyrics (do their ideas and what they have to say mean anything to anyone?) creativity/character (of the members, the songs' structures, the overal appearance/style of the band, their album covers maybe to some extent, their label's dedication to them and their label's ability to make their name known)
but also: the simple matter of overcoming the odds and being able to continue writing music with the ability to criticize your own work and to improve upon it and adapt it... many bands start releasing every little thing they write as if it were golden and that explains many sophomore slumps... also, a band really has to just release one amazing record... to be come a legend maybe they need to record a few amazing albums, but if they can make one, that's a solid first step...
here is my list according to my list above and according to my personal taste, i think:
the beatles = OBVIOUSLY WERE godspeed you! black emperor = ALREADY ARE GREAT IN MY MIND red hot chili peppers = PRETTY CLOSE radiohead = PRETTY CLOSE the cure = PRETTY CLOSE sunny day real estate = PRETTY CLOSE third eye blind = PRETTY CLOSE the smiths = WERE PRETTY CLOSE embodyment = POSSIBLY COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT norma jean = POSSIBLY COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT sharks keep moving = WERE CLOSER THAN MOST TO GREAT my morning jacket = ARE CLOSER THAN MOST TO GREAT bear vs. shark = POSSIBLY COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT mewithoutyou = MAYBE SOMEDAY COULD BE GREAT recover = MAYBE SOMEDAY COULD BE GREAT panic! at the disco = NEVER IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS, SWEETHEART trophy scars = SO AWEFULLY CLOSE IT'S INSANE

you bring up two very good points. one of the biggest things i've noticed is when a band now gets good recognition for a work, the next thing i hear from them is typically garbage.
trophy scars, glassJAw, and incubus, while evolving and maturing all the while throughout their musical careers, have been very consistent in my mind in regards to musical quality. in my most honest and sincere opinion, "Goodnight Alchemy" is one of the most *perfect* works i've ever listened to. i really can't find one flaw... every song is just so perfect and they all work well to compliment each other. this of course ties into your statement about releasing 'one amazing record', which like i've said, they have already accomplished, but alphabets is every bit as monumental and i don't see these changing stripes anytime soon.
most definitely trophy scars and glassjaw. i don't think there is ever a time that i wouldn't want to listen to these bands. and goodnight alchemy is probably the best cd i've ever heard. it flows very well through out the whole cd and each song is just simply amazing. it's fun to try to find something wrong with this cd cause you never can!
