It's decent, a 2.5-3 outta 5. I think what it lacks in comparsion to Hospital Music (my favorite release) is the preciseness insturmentally. The band is fairly tight, but they are running through a more typical machine on the insturmental side, where as things like the crazy jazz solo or random samples on the Hospital Music EP really made the album cherishable. In the place of those out of the blue moments, we have sing a longs and other gimmicks that just seem like they are there to break up the constant stream of sameness.
Oh well, so Trophy Scars isn't the best post-hardcore band anymore. It's not that tragic, it's obvious the guys still care about their music, and are trying to do something different. It just seems kind of half-assed or not in the direction I wanted it to go.
Also, I think everyone can agree that Jerry's lyrics are sub-par on this album. Some of the lines are just garbage. He still has one hell of a voice, but some of the things coming out of it are just ridiculous and to the point of laughable. Strange, that one of my favorite lyricists is now one of the reasons I've grown disenchanted with the band.
On the positive side, the drummer is still the ****. And Jerry's voice like I previously said. Plus the band is making some original music at times, and they've got a very keen idea of hooks. I just think all the songs are concentrated on exploiting the idea of a great hook, and it makes them lack. Oh well.
Good job, I guess. But we know you can do better Trophy Scars, so why aren't you?
