Just listened to it through once. It's very Tom Waits. Music and vocals are definitely taking a page out of that book. Haven't decided if I love it, I feel like it doesn't really capture the full range of their abilities the way a lot of tracks off Bad Luck did. Although I guess that record was a big step forward, so it would be hard to match that kind of quality. I hope they stick to mostly tracks off Bad Luck when I see them in Brunswick next weekend.

It's damn good. It has a very powerful gripping tone. Jerry's vox are the sh!t as usual. Can't wait for the EP!

sorry if this may hurt to answer, but those voice mail recordings in your songs.. are they recorded during relationships etc. in other words - are they real?

haha no, that's not a hurtful question. thanks for your consideration though!

yes they are all real... except the voicemail message in the original version of jerry's the name. that was not real. that was staged by our friend emily.

the august 1980 voicemail is played in reverse - as a symbolic gesture of reversing a fixed segment of time. also, we are overly self-satisfied with our bemusement of devil worship.

the voicemails were not to exploit any single female (in fact, they are all flattering voicemails); i like the preemptive nostalgia that sets the personal tone to whatever track it is you may be listening to. there has only been two unique women (besides emily) to appear on trophy scars records in this fashion. one reoccurs from alphabets to bad luck, the other resides solely on the august 1980 7".

just played it reverse, pretty hard to understand the second part.. most likely because of my english.

it's really amazing, seriously, haha. now all i want is to find her on some facebook thing to see how gorgeous a girl can be to have such an amazing song dedicated to her.

jkk - thank you... but if you ask me, she deserves a Michelangelo of herself. I just aint that good.

i would never give up her privacy, that would be exploitive. sorry. but, please, take it from me - she is resplendently breath taking. she reminds me of audrey horne in twin peaks... probably a big reason why i am obsessed with that character.

It's amazing when you see the girl perfect for you and she takes your breathe away, only to have the butterflies wings dissected with a scalpel. Was a great song I like it. All your guy's stuff is amazing, can't wait to see you live. Why the **** aren't you in Michigan!?
Keep us updated when new songs come out too :)

I was actually wondering that too. Lately I've been paying a lot of attention to the stories of the girls in your songs, whether they're mentioned by name or not.
Have they heard them? How do they react?

hahaha, oh man. of course she knows that! that would be terrible if i put them in there without her permission. i'm not a creep! this was a decision made by the designer, my ex, and myself. it plays with the twin peaks theme and her scary likeness to sherilyn fenn's character, audrey horne.

these are not girls i'm obsessed with, these are girls i had meaningful, loving relationships with. i remain close to a lot of my ex-girlfriends. i'm a very gentle dude... i'm not vindictive or spiteful. trophy scars is an outlet to exaggerate, embellish, to create something dramatic, something tragic.

everyone loves the songs where my life is such an open book - but it's really not. if you knew the half of it you'd be bored. i work a 9-5 like everyone else. i watch tv. i read comics. i chit-chat. my weekends are spent at bars or at home, babysitting my little brother. i spent 8 years in catholic school (4 at a benedictine high school and 4 at a jesuit university) and fell in love with theologians and philosophers who professed faith but understood the drama of mankind. i read (too much) hemmingway growing up and got tear-jerked by whinnie the pooh cartoons. i'm ridiculously opinionated about film and music because of how much emotional stock i've invested in them. i am a writer. that's just it. i love writing and i love to write about things that will gut you, scare you, make you smile, make you sad, make you think... essentially make you feel what i've always loved feeling after listening to a song, looking at a panel of art from a comic, watching a movie, going to a bar with a great jukebox, reading a book, etc. i'm inspired by a billion things at once. to evoke these inspired feelings i have to know what i'm talking about, and the things that are most real in my life are true relationships with other people; real characters... i want to give them context so i can break your heart. then i want you to feel close to me, i want you on my side. i want to show you how i self-destruct. i want you to be there when i feel curious enough to do something bad. i'm selfish. i'm wonderful. i'm boring. blah. i'm YOU magnified.

every girl i've ever written about is fully aware of their song. i've been mostly surprised from the reactions i've garnered. most of them are flattered (what a relief) and some of them are not. as the storyteller, i have total control over the story and that's more work than you may think. i want to really shine the light on dirt and sad parts but real life isn't always like that. i know as a music listener, i want drama in a song, and i know people expect a certain level of drama from trophy scars. however, some girls feel i've painted them in a bad light... and they are right; it's easy to get everyone on my side or to let people think - "she is a mess," but it's not fair. most of the girls i've written about truly "get" me and know that i take their name with an artistic license. hell, i swear some of them dated me just to get their name in a song.

liz loved "alligators" when i wrote it - but i also knew that other people would like it too... it let liz know that i cared for her deeply and it let people know - trophy scars has a gentle heart. but when liz heard "bad winter" she was pretty upset. she thought i harbored serious animosity towards her and that it wasn't fair to make her look like a villain. but i was hurt so i ran with it. that one i had to apologize for. some people proclaim that's their favorite song on bad luck and i knew people would connect to it. a prime example of me having too much power as the storyteller.

i wrote "august, 1980" with no intentions of having the general public hear it - i just wrote it for one person to hear. i wanted this girl to know that i loved her so much, i'd even go to war against god for her (totally wrote this after watching bram stoker's dracula). she happens to be semi-christian so i'm not sure if that nod was appreciated but... i would. she heard it and was endeared. however, most trophy scars fans didn't warm up to it so fast and i knew they wouldn't. it was never for them. this one wasn't even for me!

she started dating someone else and then i wrote "darkness, oh hell"... a whole different type of record. so recently i gave her the ep and she listened to it and coyly said "you're mean,"... she later admitted that it was exactly what she should've expected from me. we laughed and had drinks and then went to go see exit through the gift shop together. i guess, you just can't stop art.

You are just the coolest dude. (+50 cool points for comic lovin', not that you need any more. gosh.)

It's one thing to write them for your listener's ears only, but man, it must take some guts to show these girls their songs. I'm glad none of them hold any strong vendettas against you (I hope.)

I always felt that August, 1980 was too personal for me anyways, at least it was meant to be like that

Yeah I'm listening to it again now and I feel like I'm looking through your windows, Jerry.

i was just reading an article that says you only get perfect pitch from being exposed to pitches as a youngin.  keep hope alive though.

figure out the key, it's fun.  i do it by picking out the vocal melody first and then you'll only have a few guesses once you have it mapped.

jerry, i was wondering.. if you really liked the girl, you want her back. right? you wrote this song for her. as we all know, being desperate for the woman who left you is only the right way to make her think she made the right choice leaving you.. weird

don't take this the wrong way, but you come off as having the mental and emotional maturity of a 15 year old.
