Best Lyric You've Ever Heard...

Whats the greatest lyric you've ever heard? The kind of lyric where after you hear it you wanna break something heavy out of jealousy because you did'nt think of it first, and you KNEW if you did that line would forever be the crowning achievment of all your writing endeavors.

yeah, Jesse Lacy's a good song writter (PLAY CRACK THE SKY = unbelievable)

I think Lesson Three does that to me. Pretty much any scars song, but I think Lesson 3 is lyrically the best. It's changed my life.

I havent a clue who this is from. But it has to be one of my favorite pieces of lyrical writing I've ever read.

Not one motion of her gesture could I forget
The prettiest bag lady I ever met
Pushing her cart in the rain
Then gathering plastic and glass
She watched the day pass
Not hour by hour
But pain by pain
If I was a basket filled with holes
Then she was the sand I tried to hold
And ran out behind me
As I swung with some invisible hands

I stopped believing, you start to move
She was like wine turned to water then turned back to wine
I stopped my leaving and the better man bloomed
And you can pour us out and we won't mind

I was dead, then alive
She was like wine turned to water and turned back to wine
You can pour us out, we won't mind
A scratch around the mouth of the glass
My life is no longer mine

If you're still looking for a blanket
Sweetie, I'm sorry, I'm no sort of fabric
But if you need a tailor
Then take your torn shirt, and stumble up my stairs
And mumble your pitiful prayers
And in your tangled night's sleep, our midnight needles go to work
Until all comfort and fear flows in one river
Down on the shelf by the mirror where you see yourself whole
And it makes you shiver...

The Fall of Troy:

Maybe she forgot about our talks, or maybe I'm mistaken.
But I swear to God, she's not getting out of this without some kind of explination.
Am I straining on your patience?
Maybe scaring you a little?
Just because I came to visit doesn't mean you have to hide.
I'll be waiting on the side,
Of your house, with an empty bodybag
And A LOADED .45!!

-AND THEN YOU WON'T FORGET MY FUCKING NAME!!
AND THEN YOU WON'T FORGET MY FUCKING NAME!!

Almost anything by the Magnetic Fields.

if i make it tonight it'll be all right
it'll make a good song or something
i've been trying to give myself reasons to live
and i really can't think of one thing

i drive around, i walk around in circles
'cause i've got no sense of direction
and i guess i've got no sense at all

all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain
and all the dope in new york couldn't kill this pain
and all the money in tokyo couldn't make me stay
all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain

i don't cry anymore, i go out the door
and i usually keep on walking
i will sit in the bar where the cocktails are
but i really don't feel like talking

i lie around and let the darkness fall
'cause i've got a sense of perfection
and nothing makes much sense at all

these are not the "best" lyrics i've ever heard, but i thoroughly enjoy them:

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

heavyheavylowlow - inhalant abuse Is illegal and can cause permament injury or be fatal

this ship aint gonna sink without its captain (we’re all gonna die) so take your twenty-first century telegraph and take your keystroked morse code (take your **** and leave) jk jk if you write in binary long enough you’re libel to lose your penmanship i can’t write a god damn thing and i can feel even less there’s an upside to corporal tunnel duster hits and ****ing your secretary (**** you) its better to give than receive better to steal

(it gets points for actually saying "jay kay jay kay")

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Ed Gein - What Is This Monstrosity?!

We have three choices from here. Evolution, regretion, or stagnation. And I will choose the first. I would rather move on. Because looking backwards is worse than standing still. I will move on. I will take Brody's advice. "You face forward, or you face the possibility of shock and damage."

(gotta love a mallrat reference)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Ed Gein - The Marlboro Man Is A Douche Bag

Light up another one, you inconsiderate **** head. You're infringing on my right to breathe clean air. For all of us who like our lungs the way they are; go smoke a shotgun instead.

(pretty much the best anti-smoking sentiment ever)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Daughters - Nurse, Would you please prep the patient for the sexual docter?

five hundred milligrams of love has be in disarray
(the room whitens to the voice of panicked doctors)

get this man to the o.r.

stat: unconscious time lapse:
(the shades rise, call button by body side)

in the recovery room i wrote a list
of all the ways that you're beautiful.
it goes on and on and on and on and on
and on and on and on and on and on and on

(i really like the end of it)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Chariot - Goodnight my lady, and a forever farewell

This horseless carriage leads me home. My hands remain folded. My life
reamins a sunday. Brick by brick i built this staircase. Brick by brick
i walk on. Situated just below the ground and just above your head. Throw
your roses, throw your tears down. If we don't meet (again) this side of
heaven, make sure you're right. Stutter.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Bright Eyes - Hit the Switch (i'll spare you its entirity, this post is way too long as it is)

...
and each morning she wakes
with a dream to describe
something lovely that bloomed
in her beautiful mind
i say, "I'll trade you one
for two nightmares of mine,
I have somewhere I die,
I have somewhere we all die"

I'm thinking of quitting drinking again
I know I've said that a couple of times
and I'm always changing my mind
well I guess I am
but there's this burn in my stomach
and there's this pain in my side
and when I kneel at the toilet
and the morning's clean light
pours in through the window
sometimes I pray I don't die
I'm a goddamn hypocrite

but then night rolls around and it all starts making sense
there is no right way or wrong way, you just have to live
and so I do what I do, and at least I exist
what could mean more than this?
what would mean more, mean more?

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Jonbenet - Behold, the white whore

the speakeasy parlor was filled with many a fair lady, fallen victim to another mind rape by their christian fathers. it was never easy to show them i loved them, He said as He was removed from the booth. no one had the time to listen to Him, they don't care. it wasn't His thing to talk like that, waking up the next day in a nightmare of a grey colored room full of friends with no names and metal as cold as hell. this was yet another favorite of His, concious effort was put into everything that He didn't do and everything else was a failed plan. why didn't this work? if only gratitude could get you somewhere. censor His bleeding hands, broken teeth and blood-red hair. this is His love. yet another day blessed with His presence. continue to beat Him, this is His love. coughing up His mother's love all over a plate of refurbished organisms, this is His love. oh mother mary, forgive them, for they have won. spoken fast enough to spark a memory into everyone's tired mind. built upon a cross of clothes and thorns of wrinkled scarves, and hung from a ceiling, and sent to every child's living room. depictions of life as told by a subdued body within us all. we aren't loved anymore. behold, the white whore.

probably. nonsense is where its at.

edit: and you can't tell me that the ed gein lyrics (at least) are abstract and nonsensical. in fact im pretty sure the straightforwardedness of them is what makes them good.

It depends. Sometimes, the lyrics seem nonesensical, but they actually have meaning. I'm tired of bands putting in random nothingness and being hailed for originallity just because they threw random words together and made unrelated sentances rhyme.

No, and actually my post wasn't directed at you. But I read a few things that just remind me why I despise that ish.

Sometimes I really think some of these guys seriously cracked open a thesaurus and wrote a lullaby, and most of the time it passes as a 'hxc' song because of other elements. (guitars, drums, keyboard, etc) so it's obviously easier for them to get away with some **** and not get questioned for it.

me personally, I prefer thoughtful, meaningful lyrics (and not to sound dumb, but..) that are easily viewed and comprehended. when you have to start dissecting a lyric piece by piece to extract meaning from it, it not only takes away from the song but most of the time bears no relation to you. That's why when I think of great lyricists I think of a lot of underground hip hop... spoken word poetry, and powerful songs that can be delivered with nothing but only a mic (and a ****ing CD player!!!)

This is a very fine example of what I mean.
excerpts Sage Francis, spoken word poetry during one of his shows:

I played connect the dots with your beauty marks
And I ended up with picture perfect sheet music
I read your musical notes with a composer's eyes
And heard our song for the first time

I heavily suggest you resurrect
your ancient neglected dust collector
If you distrust the distance in my seldom plucked heart strings

Listen when the news is sent
Extend when the rules are bent
I'll be waiting to take your leave
Make me a victim of your two step
Make me an apprentice of your body parts
Teach me to dance to your beauty marks

I'm stepping on toes here and I don't care
It's hopeless, it's hopeless
It's hopelessness holding this openess to blow a kiss
So close your lips but don't get pissed
and throw a fist at this vocalist
I'm not emotionless, in fact I broke my wrist
when I wrote the list of all those I miss

sorry for the long post but coming from a writer this is obviously something i'm very passionate about.

I'm a huge fan of straighforeward lyrics too. That's why I listen to a lot of twee indie pop because it's so sticky sweet and easy to understand. It makes me happy and it makes me feel good. Oh, and I also am a big fan of After School Knife Fight's My Shattered Glass Heart.

As I lay here, on the wet grass,
I watch the crystal clear night sky
I play connect-the-dots with the stars
Tracing images of the past I must leave behind
Memories unfold in space before me like a movie
with you as the antagonist
I watched as you played your games
Played me like a fool with a knife
Pushed in through my ribcage
Fade to black...

yup.
